The term “Classical music” introduces from the Latin word “Classicus”, meaning first class, or for the Romans, artistry of the highest order. It comprises a vast range of music styles over a period of 800 years. Classical music can have many forms, including the symphony, concerto, oratorio so on. For some, Western Classical Music is what plays in the background in elevators, reception rooms or lounges and for others, it is what snobbish ‘intellectual’ artsy folks indulge in pretentiously.

This course is specially for those students who are passionate about Western Classical and eager to learn more about it, but who have not necessarily had any advanced technical music training or taken any college-level music courses. Using a simple and enjoyable teaching style, this course introduces the novice listener to the wonders of western classical music. This course will focus on Western classical music of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, music that exemplifies tonality, the system of major and minor keys, including pieces composed by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Wagner, Brahms, Richard Strauss, and others.
